Eko Core Electronic Stethoscope

Eko Devices brings heart sounds to the mHealth arena with their Eko Core stethoscope peripheral and iOS app. The Eko app is a simple transmission platform that sends a patient’s phonocardiogram to an online portal.

The Eko Core consists of a Bluetooth module that can be inserted between the chestpiece and tubing of any standard binaural stethoscope.  This means that the device can be used with a clinician’s existing stethoscope, though Eko also offers their own analog stethoscope for those clinicians who might hesitate to use an existing stethoscope with the Bluetooth module.  This ability to use an existing stethoscope, rather than replacing it outright, is one of the unique elements of this product.

Cellscope OTO - All Components (Lens Stored)


Cellscope has released the Oto HOME and Oto CLINIC otoscopes for use on consumer and clinician iPhones.  This allows the capture of otoscopy images directly on a smartphone by using a cleverly-designed phone case and a removable lens that takes advantage of the iPhone’s built-in camera sensor and flash.

The hardware for this device is relatively minimal, consisting of a slim black case for an iPhone (it will not work in conjunction with other cases) and a small lens that can be attached to a groove or cutout in the back of the case near the camera lens.  The device also ships with a small holder for the lens and specula, allowing the otoscope to be slipped into a pocket or desk when not in use.

Wireless Video Otoscope

Firefly has produced a video otoscope that wirelessly connects to a PC via a USB dongle.  The video source from this product shows up on a computer as a USB webcam or similar video source, allowing use of an otoscope without the encumbrance of wires.  TTAC had previous experience with their USB otoscope and dermascope and wanted to see how the innovation of wireless connections might be used.

Wireless Camera for Mobile Devices

Sony has developed consumer-oriented cameras that can connect to smartphones or tablets via a WiFi connection.  Within the telehealth world this means that you can now control a camera and capture high-resolution images directly to a mobile device without needing to swap memory cards, plug in cables, or otherwise introduce a personal computer into the mix.  There are multiple cameras that they offer in their DSC-QX lineup; TTAC looked at the QX-1 and QX-10 to see how these products might work within the world of telehealth.

Jedmed now sells the Horus Scope, a handheld video scope with multiple imaging attachments and a built-in display that is manufactured by Medimaging Integrated Solutions, Inc.  This product appears to capitalize on multiple trends within the video scope industry, including a handheld form factor, integrated LED lighting, and interchangeable attachments for use in multiple clinical settings.  Jedmed is the exclusive distributor for this product.

A company out of the United Kingdom, endoscope-i Ltd., has developed the endoscope-i, an iPhone-based imaging system for rigid and flexible scopes.  The system consists of a plastic mount that attaches to an iPhone, an iOS application, a light source with integrated battery, and a rigid otoendoscope.

FotoFinder has developed the handyscope, an iPhone-based mobile dermatology system.  handyscope is comprised of a light source, battery, and lens mounted to a black plastic and aluminum case into which an iPhone is inserted, a smartphone application for image capture and clinical workflows, and a web-based application for image review and additional clinical workflows.

Revolve Robotics has developed the Kubi, a robotic stand for mobile devices that offers pan and tilt functionality for mobile-based videoconferencing software.  This product addresses one of the growing concerns of those more familiar with room-based VTC platforms; namely, current mobile devices lack the ability to remotely move the camera.  The motorized Kubi pairs with mobile products via a Bluetooth connection, then allows for both local and remote devices to control the positioning of the tablet or phone.  A downloadable mobile software application and web-based interface allows for control of the device.

Google has developed Glass, a wearable computer for your face that offers hands-free and voice-activated capabilities.  Part eyeglass frames and part computer, Glass provides a Heads Up Display that communicates with your mobile phone by way of a Bluetooth connection.  While there are multiple proponents and detractors of the product, it is undeniable that Google’s foray into the wearable space with Glass is innovative.
