iExaminer Adapter and iExaminer App

Welch Allyn’s iExaminer

Welch Allyn has moved their PanOptic Ophthalmoscope into the mobile playing field with their iExaminer Adapter and iExaminer App.  The adapter, designed to attach the PanOptic Ophthalmoscope to an iPhone 4 or 4S, allows providers to capture images with the iPhone’s camera for consultation, patient education, or for later comparison.

The iExaminer Adapter is a simple, two-piece mount that fits precisely on the PanOptic Ophthalmoscope and the battery handle, and aligns the iPhone camera lens with the PanOptic’s viewfinder.  Once the adapter is attached to the scope, an iPhone can be slid precisely into position, allowing the iPhone camera to capture images of the fundus when the iExaminer App is launched.

The iExaminer app optimizes the iPhone camera for eye exams by capturing up to 85 images in five seconds. It also frames each image with a Right OD or Left OS indicator, and allows up to ten cases to be stored on the phone.

This peripheral and app, which received FDA 510(K) clearance in January 2013, will put eye exam capabilities into the hands of primary care physicians and multi-specialist clinicians who otherwise wouldn’t invest in more comprehensive ophthalmological equipment. The entire system runs approximately $600, not including the iPhone.

  • The Pro version of the app has no limit to patient file storage, assuming adequate memory is available in the iPhone.
