The olloclip

The current trend for most smart phone designs is to increase the screen size and the resolution of built-in cameras.  With many users bypassing their point-and-shoot cameras for their phone’s camera, the market for phone-photo peripherals is set to expand.

A handful of vendors are currently marketing smart-phone lens peripherals. We chose the olloclip for this Innovation Watch. The olloclip is a quick-connect lens solution for the iPhone 4/4S camera. The package contains a fisheye lens, a macro lens, and a wide-angle lens, with lens caps. All lenses can be used with both the camera and the video functions of the iPhone 4/4S. The set also includes a microfiber lens cleaner, which doubles as the lens carrying bag.

Of the three lenses, the olloclip Macro lens is most likely to lend itself to mHealth purposes. With the ability to focus at a distance of 13mm (1/2 in) and provide 10x macro shots, mHealth consumers can use it to store and forward diagnostic-quality images to their providers.
